House Stimulus Plan Will Create Jobs for Local Workers

Dozens of projects around the state will create jobs, boost local economies

LANSING – State Representative Mary Valentine (D-Norton Shores) today voted for a House plan that will clear the path for a $5 million project at Muskegon Community College that will create 80 local jobs. The project is part of a broader plan that will create more than 8,300 jobs across the state.

"These projects will help create jobs for our workers now and attract 21st century job providers to our state," Valentine said. "This plan will create 80 local jobs that will help get our working families back on their feet now. In addition, the benefits of these projects will be realized for years to come."

Using a mix of state, federal and local funding, Muskegon Community College will build a
$5 million Student Services Building, creating 80 new jobs. The project is part of a House economic stimulus package – parts of which were previously passed by the House – that will speed up funding for dozens of construction projects at universities, colleges, community colleges and airports around the state.

In addition to creating more than 7,400 jobs now for Michigan's workers and strengthening our economy, the plan passed today also will create new jobs in emerging fields by providing our colleges and universities with the facilities they need to train students for high-tech jobs in homeland security, life sciences and other cutting-edge fields.

"The time is now to move our economy forward – our residents can't afford to wait any longer," Valentine said. "Investing in our community and creating jobs for our workers now is my No.1 priority. This stimulus package is a very important part of our plan to get Michigan moving again and this is great news for our community."
