LANSING – State Representatives Mary
Valentine (D-Norton Shores) and Doug
Bennett
(D-Muskegon) today recognized Tom Morris, former president and CEO of the Muskegon United Way, on the floor of the
House of Representatives. Morris currently serves as the president and CEO of the Southwest Louisiana United Way and
was in town to recognize Michigan's support during the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
"Michigan residents have proven time and again how generous they are," Valentine said. "It is truly wonderful that so many of our residents lent a hand after these tragedies. It just proves that Michigan too has the ability to bounce back and move forward."
More than 250 people from Michigan, far more than any other state, recently participated in the United Way's rebuilding projects in southwest Louisiana.
In a letter to Governor Jennifer M. Granholm, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal praised Michigan residents for their active role not only in hurricane recovery, but also in helping to build stronger families and strengthen communities within Louisiana. Jindal deemed Michigan's support for the United Way demonstrative of its dedication to serving others in need.
Valentine and Bennett also recognized Nancy Lindman from the Michigan Association of United Ways and Morris' wife Denise Martin.
"Michigan's outpouring of support in Louisiana is characteristic of our residents' concern for others," Bennett said. "It was an honor to recognize Tom, Denise and Nancy on the House floor. I am very proud to represent such kind and compassionate residents."
