MUSKEGON – To further educate the public on changes in Michigan's agriculture industry, State Representative Mary Valentine (D-Norton Shores) Thursday hosted a "News in Michigan Agriculture" town hall meeting that focused on recent legislation, new types of farming and the economic benefits residents and businesses can achieve through agriculture.
"Helping our farmers reach new markets and making sure they receive top dollar for their products are important parts of ensuring that west Michigan's agricultural industry continues to grow," Valentine said. "The sooner we start expanding current agricultural practices and promoting our excellent products, the faster we can create more jobs for our workers and see more economic growth in our communities."
Joining Valentine at the event was Jim Byrum, president of the Michigan Agri-business Association (MABA) and a member of the Michigan Agricultural Commission. Based out of East Lansing, MABA aims to further the development and prosperity of businesses engaged in agriculture by working with legislators and other state agencies.
Agriculture is the second largest industry in Michigan, contributing $63.7 billion to our economy and providing over one million jobs in our state. As part of the new Michigan Promotion Program passed in the House last month, agriculture will be receiving an additional $1 million this year for agricultural promotion and development.
"Strengthening our agricultural industry is vital to creating jobs and diversifying our economy," Valentine said. "By increasing funding and continuing to promote and develop business, we can increase revenues for the state and create more good-paying jobs now. Changes in our agricultural industry will result in a new foundation on which we can build a new future for Michigan."
