LANSING – State Representative Mary Valentine (D-Norton Shores) is reminding the nearly 5,000 residents in Muskegon and Ottawa counties who have yet to file their federal tax returns to do so in order to take advantage of their federal economic stimulus payments.
"In these tough times, many of our residents are struggling to make ends meet," Valentine said. "It is important that they know this is money that is due to them. The stimulus package has helped put a little extra money in the pockets of countless families in Michigan and I want to make sure our residents get their fair share."
According to the Michigan League of Human Services, 3,524 residents in Muskegon County and 1,670 residents in Ottawa County have yet to file their federal tax returns to receive their economic stimulus package. More than 150,000 eligible households in Michigan have yet to file their returns, totaling $46.4 million, according to the Internal Revenue Service.
People who have not filed include disabled veterans, others with disabilities and low-income seniors – or people who do not typically have to file returns because they do not earn enough to do so, and may not understand they must file a return to receive their $300 stimulus payment. The deadline for filing has been extended to October 15.
"Everyone in our community will benefit from the stimulus payments and all you have to do is file your taxes," Valentine said. "In addition to giving our hard-working families a little much needed relief, the program has the potential to help give our local economy a boost. I urge anyone who hasn't filed their federal tax return to do so as soon as possible."
